PRACTICAL SETUP

Getting set up with AI

6 min read

You do not need a technical background. You need curiosity and a willingness to experiment. This takes under ten minutes.

Start here: four things to try

Before you ask AI anything, give it context. Tell it who you are, what you are trying to do, and what you already know. A vague question gets a vague answer. Then try these:

  • Paste in a job description and ask what skills and experience are actually being prioritised
  • Describe your work history and ask what patterns or strengths come through
  • Ask it to run a mock interview for a role you are targeting
  • Use it to research a company before you apply

Do one of these today. The habit matters more than getting it perfect.

"The tool matters far less than what you do with it. Pick one. Start today."

Which tool should I use?

Less important than most people think. Pick one and start. Three suit career use:

  • ChatGPT — the most widely used. The free tier is capable; Plus adds speed and better models.
  • Claude — strong for nuanced, thoughtful conversation and longer reflection.
  • Gemini — useful if you already live in Google Docs and Gmail.

One honest limit

When you ask AI to spot your strengths from a CV, it makes a reasonable guess from the words you gave it. That is useful for a rough read, but it is still a guess shaped by how you happened to describe yourself. A psychometric profile measures the same thing directly, from how you actually answer, not how you wrote your CV. If you want a starting point you can trust, that is the difference.

Next: Get a profile built on how you think, not how you phrased your last application.
