Why I built it

Who it's for, and why I built it

I built Career Decoded because the people who need career support the most are the least likely to get it.

Good guidance, the kind that starts with how you think and what you value, tends to depend on who you know or what you can afford. Most people never get near it, so they apply for the wrong things and wonder why nothing sticks.

I see this in my day job. I work with university students on placements and internships, and a lot of them come to me wanting help with their CV, but when we talk it through, what's missing is a clear sense of what they're good at and what they want.

The first person I built it for was my eldest daughter, because I wanted her to start out with a clear sense of who she is and what suits her. It was only afterwards that I realised I'd also built it for a younger version of me, who could have done with something like this.

When you understand how you naturally think and work, and how that connects to real careers, you know which roles to go for and you can talk about yourself at interview with some confidence. And when the roles fit, applying stops feeling like a chore, because you're going for something you're likely to enjoy and be good at.

Career Decoded is for anyone who doesn't know themselves as well as they'd like. That might be the 18-year-old who's never had anyone ask how they think, or the 35-year-old who's good at their job but quietly detached from it. It might be someone who's been out of work long enough to lose confidence and lose sight of what they're good at.

What I don't claim

It won't replace a good careers coach, and it can't promise you a job. It gives you a clear place to start, and what you do with it is yours.
